6th JSAP Fellow (2012)

2012 JSAP Fellow Award Recipients

Hiroshi ISHIWARA
Chairman of the 6th Fellow Awards Candidate Selection Committee
The Japan Society of Applied Physics

The Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) established JSAP Fellow Award in 2007, to honor its research members who have contributed greatly to the progress of applied physics through their continuous activities in JSAP. The Fellow Awards were presented to 86 members in 2007, 73 in 2008, 68 in 2009, 30 in 2010, 18 in 2011. In addition to the existing awards for our members, the JSAP Fellow International was founded this year to recognize the foreign researchers and Japanese researchers abroad who, regardless of their membership or non-membership of JSAP, have made remarkable contributions to the progress of JSAP.

The nominations for the JSAP Fellow and the JSAP Fellow International were solicited in Oyo Buturi (Vol. 80, No. 9), the Japanese language journal of our society. 49 candidates for the JSAP Fellow and 6 candidates for JSAP Fellow International were nominated by our members. Each candidate was carefully screened on the basis of their accomplishments in research, technological development, and educational and public-interest activities. After three meetings convened by Fellow Awards Candidate Selection Committee, the number of candidates was finally narrowed down to 23. Additional review on the contribution to our society was done to select the final 4 candidates of the JSAP Fellow International. This selection results were approved by the Board of JSAP on 11 May, 2012.

The 6th JSAP Fellows Award Ceremony will be held during the 2012 JSAP Autumn Meeting, which will open on 11 September 2012. The commemorative talks by the JSAP Fellow International recipients are also planned on 11 September.

We express our deepest gratitude to all those who nominated many award-worthy candidates and who contribute their time to select the candidates. We hope that more and more excellent candidates will be nominated and that the Fellow Awards will develop into authoritative awards of JSAP.
