On-surface chemical synthesis of a new graphene nanoribbon (GNR) having a combination of armchair and zigzag edge structures, and characterizations of its structure and electronic states. The atomically precise chemical structure of the GNR thus obtained on a gold surface is revealed by high-resolution atomic force microscope under an ultrahigh vacuum condition. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy and tight binding calculation demonstrated unique topological electronic states, indicating further developments and potential applications of GNRs as topological materials.
