Images from experiments where a SrTiO3 crystal was observed from the  direction, using the atomic-resolution DPC STEM method.
The image on the left shows an atomic structure image using the conventional ADF method, and the image on the right shows an atomic electric field vector color map using the DPC method.
A DPC observation, using a fine electron probe that is smaller than the size of an atom, allows direct observation of the atomic electric field, which is generated radially outwards from the atomic nucleus towards the surrounding electron cloud. State-of-the-art electron microscopes have taken a big step forward towards direct observation of the inside of atoms as well as in between atoms. (p.828)
