Improving the power density of a lithium ion battery by loading an artificial solid electrolyte interface
An artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) effectively improves the power density of a lithium ion battery, LIB. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) was used to deposit Al2O3, as an artificial SEI, on the cathode active materials. The modified electrode displayed a discharge capacity of 〜110 mAh/g at a 50C rate. The incorporation of dielectric SEIs having a large permittivity also significantly enhanced the high rate capability. A series of experimental results indicated the activated Li transfer pathway is located near the triple phase junction; the dielectric-active material-electrolyte interface. In addition, utilizing the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant effectively strengthened the low-temperature power density of the LIB.
