Synthesis of heteroatom doped graphene nanoribbons and their structural analysis

On-surface chemical reactions allowed us to synthesize graphene nanoribbons via a bottom-up approach. The structure can be highly controlled by employing a precursor molecule. In this way, various graphene nanoribbons with different widths and edge structures as well as heteroatoms have been synthesized on metal surfaces. Here, synthesis of heteroatom doped graphene nanoribbons and their structural analyses with high-resolution atomic force microscopy will be discussed. In addition to the chemical structures, the discrimination of multiple heteroatoms embedded in the graphene nanoribbon was also realized via the measured force and bond length.
