Meeting & Events

The JSAP holds two national meetings annually where generally one third of the JSAP members participate. The spring meeting (held in the Tokyo area) usually has about 9000 participants and the autumn meeting (held in other parts of Japan, such as Nagoya and Niigata), approximately 6000. The conventions are held over a period of four days during which about 4000 papers are presented in regular sessions and symposia. In addition to the 15 predetermined lectures and a general lecture, guest lectures (by invitation) and integrated/combined lectures on related fields are also held. In particular, physics and chemistry and related fields are focused upon; an exhibition on instruments and tools used in applied physics is also conducted. The meetings provide a good medium for activities related to the industrial-government-academic complex.

Every year, JSAP organizes or co-organizes (with other academic societies) ten international conferences applied physics and related fields. JSAP members can attend these international conferences at reduced fees.

JSAP-MRS Joint Symposia

Open Recruitment of Proposals for Joint Symposia
of the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) and the Materials Research Society (MRS) for the Spring 2012 MRS Meeting

Yasuhiro Shiraki
President of the Japan Society of Applied Physics

The Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) and the Materials Research Society (MRS) will develop a set of joint symposia at the 2012 MRS Spring Meeting.  The dedication to technological excellence of both Societies combined with our common missions and complementary strengths in materials science provide a unique opportunity for collaborations that will promote international exposure of our members, advance the field of electronic materials and enhance the quality of our publications.

Date: April 9-13, 2012
Place: 2012 MRS Spring Meeting
San Francisco, California, United States of America

JSAP is calling for proposals for symposia from JSAP members.  Please feel free to propose your ideas.

[What is this symposium?]

JSAP is pleased to collaborate with MRS on these special joint symposia advancing the science and engineering of electronic materials.  JSAP has a long history of technological excellence, tracing back to the founding of OYO BUTURI, which celebrates its 80th Anniversary in 2012, and represented in the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics (JJAP), which celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2012.  Like JSAP, MRS is internationally recognized as a premier society for advancing science and technology.  The joint JSAP/MRS Symposia at the 2012 MRS Spring Meeting will continue our mutual tradition of technical excellence.

Unlike the conventional symposia of the JSAP Spring and Autumn Annual Meetings, these symposia, if selected by the JSAP and approved by MRS, will be convened as “symposia as part of the regular MRS Spring Meeting.”  Accordingly, these symposia should accept not only invited presentations but also welcome general papers submitted following the “Call for Papers” procedure designed by symposium planners.  The symposium planners must plan symposia that provide both general papers submitted to the MRS website for manuscript submission and invited presentations.

[Guidelines for symposium proposal at JSAP-MRS joint meeting]

    1. First, applicants should provide the followings to the JSAP: title, purpose, scope of the symposium, candidates for invited speakers (expected candidates at present), and the name and affiliation of organizers (up to 4 persons, including the leading organizer as the plan proposer).
    2. Second, after being approved by the JSAP, applicants should submit the above proposal to the MRS via the JSAP and will be assessed by MRS, similarly to the first step.
    3. Third, applicants will be requested by the MRS Meeting Chair to design a “Call for Papers” procedure after being accepted by the MRS.

JSAP welcome symposia proposal with a unique perspective as JSAP.  When related symposia have already been held at MRS Meetings, please mention them and describe the similarities and differences between these symposia and what you propose, for reference.  Each symposium approved by the JSAP is expected to obtain financial support of approximately 1 million yen.  Those symposia not endorsed by JSAP may still submit separately to MRS for inclusion in the 2012 MRS Spring Meeting, but without expectation of financial support from JSAP.
